MP Motorsport Team Principal Sander Dorsman was full of praise for his driver Gabriele Minì after a “mental” Miami Feature Race in which the Italian came out the winner.

The Alpine Academy driver started from fourth on the grid, but had to fight back through the front of the pack after a tough opening few laps.

His charge back through the field went to the very end, as he took the lead in the final stages to take a memorable win, one Dorsman says was tough to keep up with even from the pit wall.

“It was absolutely mental, wasn't it? So many fights, changing conditions, so I guess for everybody in F2 it was a very exciting race to watch.

“I think the last lap was when I processed that we could win. There was so much going on. I think Gabi did a really good job in the last couple laps actually, and he moved his way forward.

“It was nice to see that fight for P1 with (Rafael) Câmara and (Dino) Beganovic, but when Gabi got in a mix, it was starting to get very exciting.

“This race was a bit difficult to execute a plan. We were happy with how our plan unfolded. But, it was just amazing, especially the last lap, of course, everybody went crazy. So, well done to him and to the team.”

The result moves Minì up to second in the Drivers’ Standings, while MP are now third in the Teams’ fight after a positive weekend overall in Miami.

Dorsman says that it was crucial to stay in the mix on a day where several drivers hit trouble in order to maximise points.

He added that he expects the level of competition to be just as close come Montreal, when F2 visits the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in what is another first for the Championship later this month.

“We always hope to fight for the win and the championship as much as possible. And I think these kinds of races, it's also important to stay out of trouble and maximise the points. And of course, Gabi did a great job today. I think he deserved the win.

“Now it’s onwards to Canada. Let's hope it will be a repeat of a result like this. But we need to work hard for it because it was a new venue here for everybody, but it was already so competitive.

“So I think everybody did a great job. And I guess we can expect the same for Canada.”
