Report
Oliver Goethe was in fine form on Day 1 of running at the Yas Marina post-season testing, completing a clean sweep of both sessions for MP Motorsport.
The German driver was fastest in the morning with a 1:38.979 and went even quicker in the afternoon with a 1:37.303, beating Invicta Racing’s Rafael Câmara to the top time.
Early installation laps complete, and it was Rodin Motorsport that led the way with Alexander Dunne on top with a 1:39.502, with teammate Martinius Stenshorne a further 0.052s behind.
Tasanapol Inthraphuvasak then narrowed the gap in his ART Grand Prix car, going to within 0.013s of Dunne as the first hour came to a close.
Oliver Goethe then took over at the top, a 1:38.979 the new fastest time of the morning. Joshua Duerksen went closest to him as the session approached the halfway point, 0.332s down for Invicta Racing.
Nikola Tsolov then went up to third for Campos Racing, his 1:39.337 enough to put him in the top three, albeit 0.358s down on the leading time.
As the session wound down to a close, Duerksen improved on his early effort, but stayed in P2, 0.177s down on Goethe.
With his final effort of the session though, Dunne also went to within 0.177s of Goethe, jumping up the leaderboard to third.
That brought an end to the morning’s running, with Goethe ahead of Duerksen, Dunne, Tsolov and Noel León wrapping up the top five.
Once again, it was Rodin that set the early pace with Dunne leading way with a 1:39.005, followed by Stenshorne, who was 0.234s down in P2.
As the first hour approached its end, Ritomo Miyata stopped on track, bringing out the Red Flags, with the Hitech TGR driver having stopped at Turn 5.
The session was back underway quickly, with Câmara going quickest on a 1:38.425, while Dunne also improved, the Invicta rookie led the way by 0.244s.
Kush Maini then closed the gap on the Brazilian, the ART Grand Prix driver going to within 0.177s in P2, while his teammate Inthraphuvasak jumped up to fifth.
But then came Duerksen, who did a lap good enough to put him fourth, before improving on his next attempt to go up to second, 0.129s down on teammate Câmara.
As the session headed into the final 30 minutes, León put on the Supersoft tyre to go quickest on a 1:37.819. But Duerksen beat that by over half a second on his softer compound, completing a 1:37.290, with Câmara following him across the line to end up 0.083s down in P2.
The Brazilian did improve on his next attempt, a 1:37.268 putting him fastest, before Goethe beat that by 0.066s to return to the top.
The MP driver would go unbeaten for the remainder of the session, completing a sweep of the day’s action, with Câmara in second, Duerksen third, Minì fourth and Mari Boya rounding out the top five for PREMA Racing.
Join us again tomorrow morning at 09:00 local time for the second day of post-season testing at Yas Marina.
