Report
There is still one more day of running in 2025, with the green light on Day 3 set to go off at 09:00 local time tomorrow morning. See you all then!
Well, what a day! A lot of laps done and a lot of things learned by both teams and drivers.
Câmara did go for another fast lap. He was purple through the first two sectors but lost all the time in the final sector. So no improvement on that attempt. He still remains fastest.
Well then, we have a late change at the top. Rafael Câmara goes to P1 on a 1:37.646 on his Supersoft tyre run. He is still out on track and with less than five minutes to go, could be readying himself for another push lap.
PREMA have been quietly going about their work today, and we have just seen Mari Boya go up to fifth. He was briefly just ahead of Montoya in sixth, but the Colombian driver has been demoted to P7 by AIX Racing's Cian Shields.
Câmara now moves up to third on what looked like a newer set of Mediums. He has just started another flying lap, and has set a personal best time in the first sector.
He completes an improved 1:38.857, but remains third.
So, what is going on? Well, the two Hitech and Rodin drivers are working on their starts at the pit exit.
As for ART, they are doing a full race simulation. So both Inthraphuvasak and Maini did a few laps on an older set of Supersofts, came in for a pitstop and went back out on the Mediums.
Another fastest lap from Duerksen. This time he does a 1:37.742 on the Supersofts.
Campos have just sent their drivers out for a full race simulation on the Medium tyre. From a Formation Lap to coming back into the pitlane to do their practice starts, and now both Tsolov and León are rounding the track.
Duerksen is back in P1, and by over four-tenths to Stenshorne with a 1:38.191.
Stenshorne has made it a Rodin 1-2 again, he goes to P1 by over seven-tenths with a 1:38.627.
Dunne continues to lead the way with a 1:39.359, as he continues to lower the time to beat. Duerksen is 0.356s behind in P2, with another 105 minutes to go in the day.
Half an hour into the session and it's Rodin leading the way. Dunne is 0.045s ahead of Stenshorne thanks to 1:39.723.
Long runs, long runs, and more long runs. That will be the main focus for a lot of the teams. Some teams do have more Supersofts than others, so we maybe they choose to use one this evening rather than tomorrow morning.
Another returning driver for 2026 is Kush Maini, and we also spoke to him at lunch to get a sense of how things were going with his new ART Grand Prix team.
"It's very strong. The F1 test went very well which improved my confidence a bit coming into this. Straight out of the blocks we have been very fast and I have found my confidence again. Every time we hit the track we have been top three or top four.
"So that consistency is back, which I had in the first year, which I sort of lost, so I am really happy. Obviously it's my fourth year but I feel like everything seems to be coming together, so let's keep pushing."
Kush Maini, ART Grand Prix.
Dino Beganovic had a strong morning, finishing fifth, and he is the first driver to leave the pitlane for this afternoon's session. We did catch up with him at lunch to get his thoughts on the test so far.
"Testing is halfway in. It feels good. It's quite a big change coming from Hitech, although I have some experience with DAMS from the end of last year. The main thing is to keep building with the team, and that we get to know each other and how we work moving forward.
"Also to move forward, I have to fine tune some stuff with my driving in the car and then I think we are in a pretty good position. So far so good, still some work to do, but it feels good so far."
Dino Beganovic, DAMS Lucas Oil.
We are back underway for another three hours of testing here at the Yas Marina Circuit.
That wraps up the morning session. Another three hours of testing in the books. The teams and their drivers will now take a well earned break, before returning to the track at 14:00 local time for the afternoon segment.
As we head into the final 15 minutes, several drivers are still out on track, while many are coming through the pitlane to practice their starts.
"Testing is going well. Getting through a lot of plans that we had in place before the three days. I think we have made good improvements from the race weekend which is quite a big step because I think we struggled a little bit over the race weekend. So now the feeling in the car is a little bit better, and everything for me is coming a bit easier and I think the balance is in a better window.
"There is quite a bit of traffic at the moment. Both of my best laps have been hindered quite significantly, but overall it has been a strong two days, and we have made good improvements from the race weekend. So we have the rest of today and tomorrow to keep improving further."
Alexander Dunne, Rodin Motorsport.
In terms of lap time, there is not a lot to report. ART are doing some tests ahead of their long runs later. PREMA have sent out Boya and Montoya as they start to work on pitstops.
Interestingly, DAMS have just fitted a shiny new set of Supersofts on Bilinski's car.
If you are wondering why the back-to-back Champions are at the bottom of the timesheets, here is why. They have not done any performance runs today.
Their main focus to start the day was on their procedures, so we saw Rafael Câmara doing several practice starts at the pit exit. Right now, both drivers are out on track working on their long run pace.
Dino Beganovic has just moved back into the top four, helped by the fastest first sector. A couple of personal bests in the second and third saw him complete a 1:37.536, leaving him just four-tenths down on the leading time.
Boya has just left the pitlane and joins his teammate Montoya out on track on the Supersofts.
On another note, Goethe has found more time and gone fastest with a 1:37.049.
Both car and driver are back in the pitlane, and the session has restarted. As we approach the end of the first hour, a few more teams seem to be fitting the Supersofts to their cars.
Mari Boya has stopped on the Main Straight for PREMA Racing.
This sport moves quickly, and so did Dunne on his first Supersoft tyre run, as he has now gone fastest on a 1:37.318.
It is an MP Motorsport 1-2, with Goethe, on the Supersofts, completing a 1:37.390 to lead Minì by 0.281s. Nikola Tsolov, who also used the softer compound, is in third for Campos Racing.
Minì has closed the gap to 0.035s on his next lap, as Goethe still leads the way.
A few drivers have just left the pitlane on Supersoft tyres. But there is a mix, as some are still holding on to the softer compound and are out on Mediums.
More changes at the top. Dunne has just put in a purple final sector to go quickest on a 1:38.756. Those runs on the Mediums look to be done, as the majority of the field are back in the pitlane.
Dunne had briefly gone fastest for Rodin, but Gabriele Minì has just gone quickest with a 1:38.879. Goethe followed him across the line, but is 0.154s down.
Every driver on the grid has been out on track in the opening few minutes and the fastest time has also changed hands multiple times. Currently, Goethe is back on top with a 1:39.483, just 0.022s ahead of Martinius Stenshorne.
Day 2 is underway!
Quite a lot. Expect some low fuel runs on the Supersofts, but also some race simulations. In addition to that, the teams will continue to work on their processes, especially with the new drivers. So pitstop practices, race starts and much more.
Day 1 was dominated by Oliver Goethe, who was fastest in both the morning and afternoon sessions. You can read his reaction to his and MP's performance here.
But there were a lot of happy drivers and teams, as they got through their run plans with ease, with little to no interruptions, giving themselves a good foundation to work from over the next two days.
Good day everyone and welcome to Day 2 of the Yas Marina post-season test.
