It was an historic victory as Gabriel Bortoleto became the first driver ever in Formula 2 history to go from last to first in the Feature Race.
The Brazilian’s Monza win catapulted him into serious title contention and eventually helped him go on to claim the 2024 Drivers’ Championship.
A mistake in Qualifying in the middle sector left the Invicta Racing driver spinning off and down in 22nd on the grid in both races.
Bortoleto climbed through the order to eighth place in the Sprint Race, crossing the line in a dead heat with Dennis Hauger, leading to both splitting the point for P8.
He returned the next day and went even better, able to pass several cars in the opening stages of the race before lapping quick enough to take advantage of the mid-race Safety Car to emerge in win contention.
From there, he brought home his second victory of the 2024 campaign and a hugely important one in his hopes of overhauling Isack Hadjar in the Championship. At the Prize Giving Ceremony, Bortoleto said that it was a great feeling to be recognised for the victory.
“It feels very nice to be awarded for a moment that made me very proud this year. I have to thank Mecachrome for the trophy and these two Championship-winning years and it feels amazing to be here now as Champion and with this trophy too.”
