Cuisine, coffee and karting in Asunción: Joshua Duerksen’s hometown tour in Paraguay

While he might not get to visit as often as he’d like during the season, Joshua Duerksen loves his hometown in Asunción, Paraguay.

The AIX Racing driver is the latest to give us a tour of their hometown, detailing the ideal day from breakfast to dinner, and where we should be visiting in between.

The Paraguayan takes us on a whistle-stop tour of a busy city, his local karting track and some pretty locales as part of his ideal day visit.

“Starting with breakfast, we’ll go to this coffee shop that’s in front of the government palace. It’s cool because it’s like the old city centre of my hometown and it’s a really beautiful place. There are old-style buildings, but they’ve been very well taken care of.

“The views you get are really beautiful, you see the palace and you see the river as well, so it’s a really beautiful view. So, I’d go for breakfast there. It’s a pretty famous spot as well.

“After that I’d go to the old city centre, show them around. There’s this very old hotel, a very famous one. We’d go and visit this hotel. I think it’s called the Hotel Guaraní.

“Then we’d have to go to the lake in San Bernardino. It’s not far away, just a 40-minute drive away. It’s a very beautiful lake. It’s by a smaller city nearby which is kind of like a summer city. During the summer, it’s like the whole country heads to this little city.

“It’s really fun there. It’s a very nice place, beautiful views, nice sunsets and things like that. Also, for sure I’d take them to the local go-kart track. It’s where I learned growing up and used to go to. So, we’d have to do some go-kart races.

“Of course there’s some shopping malls to go to. We have quite big shopping malls so we can go there and just see what there is.

“For dinner and to finish the day, I’d definitely take them to a steak house. We call it ‘churrascaria’. It’s really the best. We have some great meats, so I would say we’d have to go and try them.

“There are many, many places which I’ve not been to yet. But I’ve seen pictures of places that are not too far away from the city, just a short drive away. Some beautiful nature spots or some nice resorts or hotels which are really in the nature or forests. You can really see how beautiful they are.

“There are some hidden little waterfalls, very small ones, but it’s just very nice because you can connect with nature, and many people don’t know about them. I’d recommend people to go there. I’m planning to go at some point because they look really nice. Maybe over the summer break.”
