Amaury Cordeel achieved his best Qualifying result in Formula 2 as he secured P5 on the grid for the Spielberg Feature Race.

The Rodin Motorsport driver praised his team after a mid-session tweak enabled him to push on and earn a solid starting position for both races this weekend.

Reflecting on the session afterwards, the Belgian said that Qualifying hadn’t started as he’d envisaged it would following a promising Practice session.

However, he and the team adapted to the jump between Pirelli tyre compounds ahead of the final laps, and he exploited the setup to secure P5 on the grid.

“It was tough,” he admitted afterwards. “The first run didn’t pan out as it should have. In Practice we were really strong until I spun. But on the first set in Qualifying, it was hard because the setup wasn’t ideal and the margin for mistakes was small with it, so I struggled.

“But then we changed something in a good way before the second run. My first lap was good, the second lap my tyres were gone, but the first one was really good.

“It seemed in Practice from the first laps I was on it, in the top five the whole time so now we have to keep this going.”

Going into more depth about why he’d struggled initially in the grid-setting session, Cordeel says that the balance of the car shifted away from him after he’d been confident with it in Practice.

He believes that there may have been an even better lap on the table, with sector one the area that he could have improved, but the Rodin driver says elsewhere, the lap was strong.

“I struggled on that first set to do a really good lap but on the second set I was really happy with it. The first sector was still a bit messy but sectors two and three were good, so I’m happy.

“That’s the main factor that I was struggling with – the Supersoft compared to the Soft and the setup reaction to it from one tyre to the other. But we did a setup change that helped and tomorrow we’ll be on the Softs, so that’s a good thing.”

Looking ahead to the remainder of the weekend, Cordeel is keeping his feet on the ground and knows there is a chance at good points in both races. First however, he’s looking to maximise his start as once that is out of the way, Rodin’s race pace looks to be in a good place this weekend.

“Let’s see. First of all, I have to do a good start and then let’s see how the pace is. It should be good because in Practice we showed we had strong pace, so it should be good.”
