Duerksen and Goethe penalised following Baku Sprint Race

Following the conclusion of today’s FIA Formula 2 Sprint Race in Baku, Joshua Duerksen and Oliver Goethe have been penalised.

Firstly, the Invicta Racing driver was alleged to have caused a collision at Turn 2 on the opening lap of the race with Car 25 of John Bennett.

After the race, the Stewards heard from both drivers and their team representatives and examined video evidence from both onboard cameras and external views of the incident.

They determined that Car 2 was wholly to blame for the collision between the two cars, breaching Appendix L, Chapter IV, Article 2 (d) of the FIA International Sporting Code.

However, they also noted a mitigating factors, including the incident occurring on the opening lap between Car 1 and Car 12 which contributed to the collision between Car 2 and Car 25.

As a result, they applied the lesser five-second time penalty. But since Duerksen did not finish the Sprint Race, this penalty has been converted into a three-place grid drop to be served in Feature Race 1.

Secondly, Oliver Goethe has also been given a 10-second time penalty for causing a collision at Turn 1 with MP Motorsport teammate Gabriele Minì and Hitech’s Ritomo Miyata.

After the race, the Stewards heard form all three drivers and an MP and Hitech team representative and examined video evidence.

They determined that Car 10 had been to blame for the collision between the two cars as he misjudged the loss of downforce from being so close and he locked his brakes, ost control and collided with Car 3 and then Car 9.

The Stewards applied the standard 10-second time penalty meaning Goethe drops from P15 to P16 in the final classification.
