Trevor, we’re a couple of weeks away from the final round of the 2018 FIA F2 season. The teams’ title is within reach for Carlin on their first season in the championship. How are you feeling ahead of what could be a triumphant race weekend?
We’re actually still very nervous about this last race weekend because we know that absolutely anything can happen. But we’ll be doing our best to get a good result and hopefully out-score our competition.
Were you expecting to perform straight away at this level? Is there a Carlin secret recipe to success?
We were certainly hoping to be competitive from the start, but it’s gone better than we expected. As for our secret? I think it’s the age-old adage of a good group of people all working well together and pushing in the right (and same) direction. No other real secret and that’s something we expect from every team member at Carlin.
What would it mean for your team to take the crown on their championship debut?
It would be an incredible feat. To win it in our first year in FIA Formula 2 Championship would be a dream come true. Obviously, it’s a shame to not be fighting for the driver championship as well because we feel that was certainly achievable but for the team, it would be a huge achievement and something we’d all be very proud to do.
Do you feel you could have or should have sealed the teams’ title earlier?
Yes. I think we could and should have clinched it in Sochi but in all honesty that was potentially one of our worst weekends ever. It would have been great to wrap it up then but at the end of the day, as long as we can bring it home in Abu Dhabi then everything will be good.
Winning a title is never a foregone conclusion. What are the biggest obstacles or challenges you will face at Yas Marina?
Formula 2 has been super competitive this year and, as ever, the biggest obstacles remain the rival teams and drivers. We need to continue our incredible qualifying form so that we have both drivers at the front and fighting hard for the victory.
