Interview
PREMA Racing’s 2025 Formula 2 season was a mixed one, according to Team Principal Rene Rosin, who says they have to raise their level next year, as they look to climb back up the Standings.
The Italian outfit had their first winless campaign in F2, although they finished sixth in the Championship and achieved six podiums – with Sebastián Montoya and Gabriele Minì taking three each.
For Rosin though, while he says there are positives for PREMA to take into 2026, he does not believe they showed their true potential this season.
Rodin Motorsport 2025 Season Review: Keeping the momentum going
“I would say for sure it was not the season we were expecting,” said Rosin when asked to assess his team’s campaign. “We started the Championship with a pole in Melbourne, but then we got the impeding penalty for Gabriele, which meant we started in P4.
“But then the race never happened because of the extreme wet conditions, and then it was a bit of a rollercoaster.
“There have been some positive points, some good results and good qualifyings for Sebastián and also Gabriele, who finished on a high in Abu Dhabi, where he did a great drive.
“Unfortunately, some DNFs out of our control, so in the end, the potential was much higher than what the Standings showed.
“So we just needed to work even harder over the winter break, try to analyse the positives and negatives, and what we learned and to start next year with this half new line-up for 2026.”
On Montoya, who is confirmed to be returning to the team for a second season in Formula 2, Rosin said he and his team were caught slightly off guard by how good the Colombian was in his rookie campaign.
AIX Racing 2025 Season Review: Better than expected and ahead of schedule
“Sebas, did a very good job,” said Rosin. “Honestly. Sebas was a surprise for everybody. We've known him for a long time, but nobody was expecting it. The last two rounds, both Qatar and here in Abu Dhabi, he was fighting for the top few rows, fighting for the top positions.
“I don't want to get a driver thinking we need to win a Championship. We need to do the best job possible at every race we do, maximise all the points we can, and at the end, we will take a look at the season, this is fundamental.”
Rosin also previewed 2026, when PREMA will welcome Mari Boya into the team for his rookie season, a driver that he says did “everything well” in Formula 3.
While the team boss says he has a “great duo” in his cars for next year, he acknowledges they have a lot of work to do ahead of Round 1 in Melbourne, especially with how close the field was in 2025.
“Honestly, the level of the Championship is incredibly high,” said Rosin. “The level of the teams is very high, all the teams can fight for the win. If you have the right duo of drivers and the team you can work really well together.
“We honestly just need to keep working. We also need to do a better job overall. We need to raise our level, we need to try to reset ourselves to take one step behind and two step forwards.
Van Amersfoort Racing 2025 Season Review: Making the right moves
“So it's really a question of getting our head down and trying to maximise our potential. We have everything in place to do a better job, and we need to continue working.
“We achieved a front row, with a pole position in Melbourne. We have been fighting for podiums and wins, all season, but it was just a bit too up and down. So this is where we need to work hard, we need to be consistent.
“So when it's the time to finish P4, P5, we need to finish in P4 and P5 and not having spun out or doing something like that. You need to bring home all the points you can and like that you can fight for the Teams' championship and also the Drivers' championship.”
