After 14 rounds and the closest title fight in Formula 2 history, Gabriel Bortoleto came out on top in a season-long fight with Isack Hadjar to win the 2024 F2 Drivers’ Championship.
The Brazilian won twice in 2024 and became a consistent fixture at the front as he overcame a tough start to the campaign to make it two titles in a row following his FIA F3 Drivers’ title in 2023.
Closest challenger Isack Hadjar won a Championship-equalling four Feature Races across the season, though wound up second in the Standings after a difficult end to the year.
Third-placed Paul Aron also led the Championship at one stage, and the Estonian finally achieved a maiden victory at the second-to-last opportunity in Lusail.
The trio were celebrated at the Prize Giving Ceremony and reflected on their achievements from this year.
Joining the likes of Charles Leclerc, George Russell and Oscar Piastri to win back-to-back titles in the third and second levels of the FIA Pyramid, 2024 F2 Champion Gabriel Bortoleto enjoyed his finest season of his career.
The difficult start to 2024 was a long distant memory by the end, as the Brazilian grew into the season confidently, adding two race victories including that Monza win from P22 and last.
Going into the final rounds, he maintained his approach and was richly rewarded with three podiums in the final four races of the campaign to cap off a brilliant campaign.
Accepting his trophy, Bortoleto said that his season was a 'dream come true'.
“It feels amazing, a dream come true for me. I’m super grateful, thanks to everyone – Invicta, my family and everyone who’s supported me, it’s been a very enjoyable season.”
Four wins and multiple podium finishes elsewhere marked a huge season and step forward for Isack Hadjar in his second Formula 2 campaign.
Having struggled to make more of an impact during his rookie season in 2023, he was back to contending at the front on a regular basis and led the Championship for the middle third of the season.
Unfortunately, a tough end to 2024 took the title out of his hands and he wound up P2 in the Championship.
He was also awarded the Aramco Best Performance Award for his Feature Race win in Melbourne on the night.
He led the way at one stage but in the end, it was third place for Paul Aron. The Estonian driver took a maiden victory in what was an impressive rookie campaign, and speaking at the Awards Ceremony, said it was a hugely positive year for both driver and his Hitech Pulse-Eight team.
“If you’d had given me a contract at the beginning of the year that said I’d finish P3 in my rookie season in the Formula 2 Championship, I’d have signed it straight away. I think it’s been a very successful year for myself and Hitech.
“It’s also been a very enjoyable year too, which is important. We do this sport because we enjoy it and it’s easy to forget that because it’s so competitive. But I’ve really enjoyed the year. It’s been a successful one – I leave with the joint-most podiums, most pole positions and on average, one of the best speeds in Qualifying on average.
“Congratulations to Gabriel, I was at this Prize Giving last year finishing third in Formula 3 and I finished third with him winning it, so congrats to him again, well done and well deserved but I’m proud of my season.”
