Interview
Rafael Câmara is targeting a maiden Formula 2 win in Sunday’s Monte Carlo Feature Race after collecting useful insight from the Sprint.
The Invicta Racing took pole position in dramatic fashion on Friday, leaving him starting P10 on the reverse grid.
Câmara made a solid start to get up to P8 and finished in that same position to score just one point.
However recapping the race, the Brazilian admitted that he was not pleased with everything but used the 30 laps as a learning tool for the Feature.
“Not the most fun race, a bit boring to be honest, but Monaco can be like that,” said the Brazilian. “I was just trying to go for the fastest lap, but in the end, I was also not feeling very comfortable to even try that.
“So we were just trying some consecutive push laps to see the balance for tomorrow, and to understand what we need to improve.
“But I am happy, we got a good start today, we were able to get to eighth position and then get one point that is always important for the championship. So happy with today, and now we're just looking to the things to improve for tomorrow.”
When asked to speak further about what he struggled with particularly on the car, Câmara acknowledged that it was probably a mixture of him and the car.
“I was just not really comfortable with the car today,” he continued. But like I said, we can look at the data and look at what we can improve. Also with my driving, we can look at what we can do better.
“Then we can put in place everything tomorrow where we can take the big points. Still, it will be not an easy race because a lot of things can happen.
“We saw the past years in Monaco that anything can happen, so we keep our heads down to make sure that we keep working in the good direction. I think doing those consecutive push laps gave us a very clear image of what to do for tomorrow with the car.
“Also my driving can be improved and we can see which areas we are weak and which areas we are strong. So I think like that you can collect very good data with the team, with the engineers, and see what we can really put in place for tomorrow.
“I think it's always good in a way, it's a different rhythm, the race to qualifying. So it's also a good thing to do a lot of laps and to get in the rhythm for tomorrow as well.”
Looking ahead to Sunday as a whole, Câmara, who is set to line up alongside Nikola Tsolov, is excited for the challenge to come.
“I’m obviously very excited,” said the Brazilian. “In Monaco, it is already a very good help starting from front row, especially from P1. So just trying to focus on the basics, and how we do our things well.
“I’m not really overthinking about anything, just trying to get good points for the championship. Obviously, we're going to be very happy with the win, but just being up there I think would be already a good result.”
