Campos Racing has confirmed that Ralph Boschung will be replaced by Roberto Merhi at "upcoming events" in the 2022 Formula 2 season.

Boschung has been hampered by a neck injury that has persisted since the early rounds of the season, but will now be taking time off to allow it to fully heal.

The Swiss driver said that it was a difficult decision but that he was sure it was the best thing for his future, adding that his replacement will be a capable pair of hands for the Campos team.

"It’s been a tough few last months, since after Imola the neck has dominated my everyday and professional life , it’s very tough to leave the team mid-season like this but I really need to recover from this injury and I thank my sponsors and the team for being fully supportive. I wish Roberto the best of luck in Austria, I am happy to give him the chance to drive the MoonMobile, he is a good friend and a great driver."

Merhi last drove in FIA Formula 2 back in 2018, competing in the last four rounds of the season for Campos. The Spaniard secured a podium finish during the final race weekend at Yas Marina, finishing the Sprint Race in third position.

The main himself said that the venue at which he'll make his F2 return is a good one and he's set his sights high ahead of the weekend.

“I’m delighted to drive the Ralph’s car. I will try my best to achieve strong results to respond to the trust that Ralph, his sponsors and Campos Racing have placed in me. I drove a F2 car in 2018 for the very last time with Campos Racing, with whom stepped onto the podium at Yas Marina. I really like Spielberg circuit, a good place to come back.”

The team will be hoping he can replicate that form he showed in Abu Dhabi in Boschung's absence.

“Unfortunately our driver Ralph Boschung won’t be able to contest in Spielberg as his season turned into a nightmare after Imola and we haven´t delivered our full potential yet," Adrián Campos Jr said in the team announcement.

"I feel very confident because he will work a lot to be back with us as soon as possible and at his 100%. Besides, I would like to extend a warm welcome to Roberto, who will be temporarily replacing Ralph. We expect a quick adaptation and let’s complete a positive weekend together.”
