WHAT TO WATCH FOR: Stories to keep an eye on at Spa-Francorchamps
A few key storylines to look out for as the title fight goes to Spa-Francorchamps for Round 8 of the 2026 FIA Formula 2 season

After a short break, Formula 2 is back in action this weekend for Round 8 at the historic Spa-Francorchamps.
The title battle has reached a critical point with Nikola Tsolov now the leader in the clubhouse, with he and his Campos Racing team currently the ones to beat.
The Bulgarian driver and the rest of his rivals now head to the Belgian hills, and we have picked out a few storylines to keep an eye on before they hit the track.
TSOLOV EYEING A RECORD SEASON
Tsolov is in the midst of one of the great runs in Formula 2 history.
The Red Bull junior driver is coming off the back of a Silverstone round where he achieved the fabled double – winning both the Sprint and Feature Race.

Tsolov now has six victories in 14 races, and if he repeats that same trick at Spa, he will eclipse the record of seven wins in a season set by Charles Leclerc in 2017 and George Russell in 2018.
Even if Tsolov does not to do that this weekend, he needs just two wins between now and the end of the year to break this record.
So could he do it at Spa? On current form, why not?

CAMPOS MAKING HISTORY OF THEIR OWN
Tsolov is not the only one rewriting the record books, with Campos Racing continuing to make history of their own.
The Spanish outfit have already taken eight wins in 2026, putting them just two victories shy of PREMA Racing’s single-season benchmark of 10, set in 2023.
They can only draw level with that total at Spa, but another milestone could still be achieved this weekend.

Tsolov’s three consecutive victories for Campos mean that if either he or Noel León wins the Sprint Race, the team will set a new record for the most consecutive wins in a Formula 2 season, with four.
That would move them clear of the current mark of three in a row, which they share with ART Grand Prix from 2018 and PREMA Racing, who achieved this twice in 2023.
Given Campos’ form this season, there is every chance they could leave the Belgian hills with yet another record to their name.
RIVALS EYEING A FIGHTBACK
Tsolov’s form is eye-catching, especially as his best weekend of the year came at Silverstone, a track where he and Campos expected to struggle.
Heading to Spa, the championship leader’s rivals know they must fight back to stand a chance of beating him to the title.
Gabriele Minì is his closest challenger –17 points behind – and had led the Standings for much of the season before Tsolov reclaimed P1 last time out.

The MP Motorsport driver has said he and his team need to find more pace to compete with the Bulgarian and he will be keen for that to happen at Spa.
Next up are Rafael Câmara and Alexander Dunne, who started from the front row at Silverstone, but failed to convert that into a podium let alone a win.

Both drivers are close to 50 points behind Tsolov, and if they are to achieve their goals of winning the title, they will not want that lead to get any bigger before the summer break.
There also other drivers behind the top four who will be keen to put themselves back in the conversation.
As a result, Spa kicks off a huge two weeks before the summer break, as Tsolov could either extend his lead or find it reduced before the final part of the season.

EYES ON THE WEATHER
The recent heatwave has been a massive factor over the last few rounds, but it has also meant we have oddly not had a wet session in this European leg of the calendar.
That could change this weekend, with current forecasts showing that there is a chance of rain on Friday and Saturday.
Spa has been known to produce some thrilling sessions in the wet, including last year’s Feature Race, and we may be set for more.
It could lead to some entertaining on track action for both the drivers and the fans. Let us see what Spa brings!
