Sebastián Montoya has made a strong start to his rookie season and continues to catch the eye not only with his performances in the car, but also with the helmet he is wearing this year.

The PREMA Racing driver recently took us through his retro 2025 lid, how the design came about and why the quote on the back is so important to him.

“I decided to go a little different this year, to change it up. Honestly, it came out quite cool. I wanted to mix my old helmet with my dad’s and add a retro spec to it.

“I'm using kind of his Formula 2 design, his Formula 3000 design as well as, but I wanted to make it more modern and also have a bit of retro. I really like it. I think it looks really cool inside the car.

“It has a lot more of a white design from the middle to the back, changed quite a bit at the top as well. I am really happy with it. It's so different to what I've done in the past and I just wanted to try something new this year.

“This is a new year for me, I’m trying a lot of new things, and honestly because the helmet is one of the few things you can customise as a driver, I decided to go all out on it.

“I am really happy with it. On the back I have my logo, Amor Fati. For me it looks really nice, I really enjoy the colours and it just looks really cool.

“It took a long time to do it because I wanted to make sure that it's something that I wanted. I actually reached out to my uncle because he has already wanted to try designing my helmets, because he is a designer.

“I said let's create something new, because I told them how I wanted my dad's old design but with a bit of modern twist to it, and then he was like okay.

“Then he brought up the retro aspect to it, and I thought that is actually really cool. So we started looking at the designs, the colours, trying to change up the patterns a little bit, trying to change it up slightly, but still identifying with the Colombian colours and the Montoya design. It took us a long time but I am really happy with it.

“I've used Arai Helmets my whole life, and my dad has used Arai for as long as I could remember. Arai have taken really good care of me, ever since I was a baby.

“My first ever painted helmet was an Arai, and I've just stuck with them ever since, and they have just treated me super well and I think loyalty is a big thing. I'm really happy with the service they provided and the helmets they give me, and I think they’re really comfortable, which at the end of the day is really important.

“My dad saw parts of the design here and there. The more it happened the more I wanted to involve him as well. Not only him, but also my mum, we all had an opinion because at the end of the day, I also designed it to add a lot of sponsors.

“So, it opens up a slot for that as well but still having a design to it. I feel like some helmets nowadays they look quite similar and I wanted something to represent the family but still be a little bit mine.

Amor Fati, it's a saying that I learned last year, which is love every situation, love everything. That's kind of taught me to appreciate every moment that happens, and that's why it’s on the back of my helmet, because motorsport is a crazy world, and there are a lot of ups and downs.

“But even through all that you still have to love it and I do. So, it's just a gentle reminder that every time I put the helmet on and I go out there, and it's back there, just to love every situation.

“It doesn't matter what you're going through at the end of the day, we keep working on it, the results are going to come, everything is going to come but just be very grateful for every situation.”
