Isack Hadjar continued his momentum in the first session of the Spa-Francorchamps weekend, ending up fastest of all in the first bit of on-track running of the weekend. The Campos Racing driver topped the session with a 1:58.730.

Despite ending up fastest, Hadjar says the team still has some work to do ahead of Qualifying as he and the team look to cement their position at the top of the times in the all-important session later on.

“It was a damp track at the beginning, and we all waited in the pits because there was no point going out. We waited until it was fully dry and could get three laps in the end.

“It felt like it was enough for me, I had a really good car underneath me, there’s still some improvements to be done but the raw pace was there so that’s the most important thing.

“We are looking to improve a bit sectors one and three, we are missing a bit there. Sector two we look really strong. We need to find a solution but I’m sure we will do.”

Hadjar was immediately on the pace after a somewhat subdued start by everybody in the Practice session.

With early morning rain soaking the track, drivers and teams were tentative in the early going, but once the cars were on track, the #20 Campos was at or near the top of the times after each flying lap.

Remarking on how important that is to carry into Qualifying, Hadjar says it was a nice bonus but with conditions looking like improving further for the grid-setting session, he is taking nothing for granted later on.

“It’s a track I really like. I’ve always had good pace here so I’m looking forward to Qualifying.

“From now on, it should be a dry Qualifying. There won’t be more than three laps for sure so it’s about doing no mistakes. It’s a really long lap, a lot of corners so there’s a lot of opportunities to make a mistake and that’s where you need to be locked in, do a clean lap and get a nice tow and we should be fine.”
